Well its the penultimate week, and i have just done my last long training run, which was a combined road/beach/road run which totaled a new personal best for me of 15.27 miles :)
It was a bit of an adventure as i managed to get stranded in the Birkdale salt marshes and struggled to find my way back to an actual path that was dry.
I felt good on the run though ,so carried on running and i only had a target of 2 hrs running knowing that that would get me pretty much to half marathon distance of 13.1 miles.
I have just got some short runs left to do to make the first 3 to 5 miles a bit easier,as that seems harder than the last half of the run.Mainly because my breathing rhythm takes a while to settle down, and as i get a little slower later in the run i hit a more comfortable pace.
The minimum sponsorship has been raised and paid to CLIC Sargent already which is a relief, and i am well on the way to a £600 total,so thank you everyone who has donated so far.
I am really starting to look forward to the weekend of the run now,as i have two days booked in a Ramada Hotel so i intent to make it a good weekend, plenty to do while i'm there.
I'll post one more blog prior to my run, probably on the day of departure.Until then, bye for now.

GNR training blog week 27- 20th Aug 12>
Well nothing major to report from last week apart from the fact that i got a 12.6 mile training run in, which was good for experience and endurance.
This week i have managed a personal best on my distance, i have managed a 14 mile run my longest yet.
I don't think i will be running any further than that in the future, as i only need to do 13.1miles in the GNR, and quite frankly i think that is my limit. My knees cannot take more than 13 miles of pavement bashing on a regular basis.
I managed to do just under 2 hrs which is a typical milestone for new runners.I'm not sure if i'll manage it on the big day, as i plan to have a 5 min rest for a snack and a drink half way round to increase my chances of a more comfortable second half of the run.
Sponsorship is going well,i have managed to reach my minimum of £350 and have raised the bar to £400 for my next target.
Good news on the transport front as well,it looks like i may be getting a lift so that will save me £70+ on a train ticket :)
Just under 4 weeks to go now, this is the period were i try and take it easy to prevent injury, and stick to short runs i think, because the first 10K seems to be the hardest, and i need to feel more comfoortable in the first section of the race.
Bye for now.

GNR training week 25 blog. 6 Aug 12>
Well weathers not been too bad this week,my days off where a bit out of sync with the norm this week so had a little cycle on Thurs and then a little run in the evening as well 4.71 miles, this was one of my short runs.
On Fri before work i went out for another cycle, this time doing 20K which i quite enjoyed as the weather was quite good.
I got my GNR race number this week as well no.34,591, only 24,000 places behind my mate lol, got a bit of catching up to do there.Hoping to beat him still :)
Sponsorship has been going well this week, i am now over my minimum £350 and i am now aiming towards my original hoped for target which was £500.
Going to do probably two more half marathon distance training runs between now and the actual race itself to get my legs used to the endurance, cannot risk anymore as i don't want any injuries prior to the day.
Well thats all for this week folks.

GNR Training week 24 blog. 30th July 2012>
Only one run this week, weathers been wet on the days i wanted to go on a run as i run on my days off normally, but my days off have been a bit random recently which has been annoying.
Finally managed to get a 10K run in prior to work on Saturday.
As ever it was a flipping hot day, even though it was cloudy, cant win its either too hot or just plain wet lol.
Started to give my run a good push through various avenues, mainly work, forums, letters etc..and the contributions have finally gone up nicely. A nice extra donation from my brother and a good sized donation from Teh-Muay Thai in Southport, and also Holmes-Smith Butchers of Southport also, a big thankyou to them.
I managed to get myself a nice little discount on another running top and shorts combo from Karrimor Running, an absolute bargain at only £8 each instead of the normal price of £30, and i got myself a running cap incase its too hot and sunny on the day.
Well thats it for this week :) thanks to everyone who has donated so far, and to everyone else please keep it coming, as its a worthy cause.

GNR training blog week 23, 23rd July>
Well its been a warm week which has put me off so far as i have been struggling in the heat.
Thankfully today (Thurs) was a little cooler in the evening, so i set out determined to finally get a long overdue long run in as i haven't managed one since i last achieved my half marathon distance, and felt like i was going backwards as the challenge was no longer there.
I am happy to say i achieved 13.91 miles in 2hrs which was a new record for me,and only one stop for a little bit of nourishment and a drink.
So i am well happy again :)
I have printed off some polite begging letters to send to some local busineses etc to try and raise some more donations and sponsorship,so hopefully a bit more will come in.
Payday next week as well so i will be hitting work colleagues for donations as well.
I've managed to get my money together to pay for my return train ticket to the GNR, and i am roughly half way there with my hotel costs, so hopefully that will be one less worry.
Bye for now,and please if you have not donated yet please consider it. :)
Thankyou.

GNR training run blog-week 21,9th July>
Well only one run this week, did a midweek small run of 5 miles, weather has been pretty wet this week so not had the chance to run on the days i wanted.
I was due to run today (sun) and it was due to be my long run roughly 10-11 miles, but i didn't feel to good when it came round to the time to run so i had to abandon the idea.I'm now planning on doing it tomorrow if i feel ok.
I'm going to have to start plugging for donations a lot more soon as well as the y have stopped coming in.But i haven't started at work or my church yet so hopefully they will pick up a bit more.
Thats it for this week :)

GNR training run blog week 20: 2 july 12>
Well no running done on weeks 17,18 and 19 as i wanted a good rest after managing to achieve my half marathon distance.I wanted to give my knees a rest in particular as i suffer knee pain sometimes.
Now on week 20 and i've started with smaller runs which i am supposed to do several times a week and then back onto a long run at the end of the week but that will be next week.
I just rejoined a gym so at least if the weather is poor i can run indoors, and i can do some overall body conditioning.
I have done 2 runs this week,a 5 mile one on thurs which was quite difficult as it was hot and i had'nt hydrated enough prior to the run.
The second run was 6 miles on sat before work, still hot and difficult but i took my drink just in case,it is becoming noticeable that it is extremely difficult to run in heat, even 20c seems too hot,so i am going to have to purchase a decent running cap and soak it in water to at least try and help.

GNR training week 16 blog, 10 June 2012.
Well i finally did it i managed to actually run a half marathon :) i actually managed 13.59 miles, which considering i was out trying to achieve 11 miles is a good run for me and i'm really happy with that.
I managed to hit the magic 13.1 mark in just under 2 hrs as well which is a milestone for runners who have not been running long.
I don't feel as bad now at the fact that i am still only running once a week, but i know now that i can achieve my distance required for the GNR run itself.
The more practice i do the easier it will get and the more my legs will get used to it.
Short blog tonight as i am tired after the run.

GNR training blog week 15,28th May 12 >
Had two training sessions this week on my 2 days off monday and tuesday.
I managed to do a 20 mile stint out on my mountain bike while it was a nice sunny day :) it was the first proper ride i'd had on my bike this year so far,and i had forgotten just how uncomfortable the seat was :( but i managed it,and i must say really enjoyed it although it was a tad breezy.
I pretty much followed my running route out down the Coast rd and through Churchtown and back into Southport, then turned around and did it again in reverse.Wasn't a bad ride overall.
Day two was a 10K run as my legs were tired from my cycle ride, and i was regretting it when i started as my legs felt empty with regards to energy, but i trundled on.
It was a bit breezy which made it a bit difficult and i found myself stopping a few times for a 3 min breather as it was hot again, and i had a 5 min walk half way round again.
Strangely overall i matched my fastest time for a 10K and with the stops i had it was a good time,so i was very happy overall.
In the upcoming weeks i will be stepping up my training a bit by doing a few 3-4 mile runs during the week,as well as my one long run per week,so we'll see how i get on :))

GNR training blog week 14, 21st May12>
Had a hard run today (thurs) it was sunny and hot and i ran mainly along the Coast Rd and seafront which had no shade whatsoever so it was a struggle,i had to stop a couple of times in the shade of a tree or bush to cool down a bit and get a breather.
The run started at Victoria Park on Rotten Row and i ran around the outside off it and up the entire length of the Coast Rd to the Plough roundabout,i had a break for 5 minutes while there sat on a wall in the shade as i really was overheating and worried i may pass out if not careful.
I then started the long slog down to the Botanic Gardens, through Churchtown Village and to the top of Roe Lane were i popped into Spar for a Powerade for the run back.
I then ran as per usual down Roe Lane,Manchester Rd and into town, upto the Marine Lake and down The Promenade and past Splashworld and back to where i started at Victoria Park where i had a well earned sit down in the shade to rest and cool down.
Overall it was my longest ever run, only by 0.1 of a Km but it was longer :) and on a hot day.
Total run was 10.5 Miles, next week hopefully i'll manage an 11 miler or at least over the next couple of weeks anyway.

GNR 2012 week 13 training blog 15/5/12.
Well no weeks 10-12 as i have had a few lazy weeks and haven't done any real training, but i'm back on it now and have done two days back to back training this week in an attempt to get back on track.
I did a 5k run to my parents on monday and said my hello's and had a brew but i had struggled to do the run as i was boiling on the run and my head felt like it was going to explode lol.
After a little rest i then ran another 5k home, which was easier than the first as it was a little cooler.
On Tuesday i felt like i needed to make up for my poor perforance on Monday and needed to catch up with the weeks of missed training. So i did a scenic non stop 10k run around Victoria park, the promenade, marine lake, marine drive and finally Victoria park again.
It was windy but sunny and not too hot so overall it was an enjoyable run.
I managed to pace myself at an easy pace and maintain comfortable breathing and i managed a total time of 49 minutes which was the same as my previous fastest 10k so i was very happy with that after missing several weeks :)
So hopefully i may get another run in this week but will probably be between 5k and 10k as i'm planning on entering the Southport Funfest 5k on the 10th June so i'm going to try some 5k training to improve my speed.
Bye for now folks.

GNR training week 9 blog. 21/4/12
Well this week entailed just one run again as i had worked 6 days straight and had no energy for a run until my first day off which was today (21st).
I mapped myself a 10 mile run on the `map my run` app on my pc and set off at roughly 8pm in the evening on the run itself.
It went quite well,i started at a slow and steady pace and it took 3-4 miles to a comfortable breathing pace were i didn't feel in the slightest out of breath.so then it was all about staying at that pace and watching my running form and making sure i got the most out of my legs.
I ended up running past my Thai Boxing gym at roughly 10km/6.2 miles and walked for a few minutes while i ate a Milky Way to give me a little energy for the slog back to town.
It was quite a windy day so i was surprised that i managed to maintain my usual pace of 5.30mins per km,this is not particularly fast at all but for me its a good pace to control breathing effectively.
Unfortunately i couldn't do a Thai Boxing class this week or last due to when my days off fell, and sadly i won't be able to do one next week either :(
Anyway onwards and upwards i'm still on schedule with my distance so i'm more than happy.

GNR training week 8 blog 12th April 2012.
Did a 9 mile run in 1hr 18 min which is slightly faster than my average pace, but i ran out of energy and will power so i need to work on my endurance still.
When the weather warms up and the nights warm up i'll start squeezing an extra run in during my week as one run a week is not enough.
I'm still on schedule though as my plan is to increase my runs by an xtra mile every month upto Aug so i'm ready for 13+ miles.
I've had a few training plans come through,so i'll be looking at them a bit more closely to work out whats the best plan for me.
Bye for now :)

GNR training blog week 7 (2nd Apriil 2012)
No week 6 as i had a rest week as i was on a week off and had a few social events :) i.e. a few drinks.
Well week 7 was only one day of exercise as i ran to my Thai boxing class, did a one hour class and then ran back again.
Roughly 3 miles there and 3 miles back.It was a bit easier this time compared to last time and i'm getting more used to running with a rucksack on,even though its not ideal.
I was planning on another run later in week, but didn't manage it.
So i'm afraid not much to report this week, but it was the easter hols, and i was working most of it.

GNR training week 5 (thurs 22/March) blog.
Well no proper runs this week,as i was having a bit of a rest as i'm trying to take up my Muay Thai boxing again after a 3 month winter break.
I managed to jog and walk to the gym which is roughly 3 miles which was a bit difficult as i had my gym bag on my back and it wouldn't sit tight so i might have to invest in a bag i can fasten to me fully.
I managed to do my Muay Thai class which was mainly 5 rounds of pads work which is always difficult, but my fitness has improved vastly since taking up the jogging/running and it really helped me get through the class.
I got to the end of the class after thoroughly enjoying it and set out on running home again.Again it was difficult again with my bag,and i was obviously tired now after my class, but i managed to run the majority of the way home, just in time for my legs to tighten up and start to ache.

GNR training run week 4 blog.
Well i had a week and a half rest after my last two close together runs as i couldn't really get one in on my time off.I went for a late night run at 9.20pm aiming for a minimum of 10k and a max of 20k even though the longest i had previously run was 16k.
I ended up doing 14.4k as my legs had nothing left to give, and i probably would of tripped over my sluggish feet and injured myself if i continued lol.
Happy with the run though,it was raining off and on so not the best conditions, and it was a decent distance for my experience level.
I did manage to run 11k without a stop, walk or a breather which was new for me,as i have usually had a little breather due to stitches etc at about 7 or 8k so an improvement was made at least.
So i am currently running at 2 thirds of my final target distance for the big day/main event in Sept so i am on target at least.
Going back to my Muay Thai classes next week as well,so i will have to closely monitor whether or not it affects my running.Fingers crossed it will help and not hinder my progress.

GNR 2012 training run week 3.
Did another training run tonight, although i was going to wait til sat as i ran the charity 10K only two days ago,but i felt like i was wasting an opportunity as i had been on 4 days off.
Started off going up the coast road/Marine Drive up to the plough roundabout which was quite knackering as i started off too fast and quickly started to struggle with my breathing.
I managed to settle down abit and after initially thinking i'm never going to make this,i started to feel confident that my legs and breathing might allow me to put in a decent effort.
I continued down to the Botanic Gardens and through Churchtown which marked the 10th Km of the run and headed back to town via Roe Lane.
Last week i managed to increase my run by a couple of Km so i wanted to at least do the same distance this time,so my target was 13Km,i could only go by time as a guide to how far i had run,and when the mix i was listening to finished i had an idea i'd done roughly 1hr 15min so far,so i kept running.
Once in town i decided to run upto the Promenade and back towards my starting point.I passed my starting point feeling better than i did when i actually started there!
By now my legs were borderline at the limit so i managed to run round Splashworld and to Rotten Row roundabout, and then onto Lord St.
I could of stopped there as i was almost home, but managed to run to the Monument, along London St and then down Chapel St and back home.
Still unaware as to how i'd actually done overall,i entered my running data into `Map My Run` and created the route map for my actual run,and was really chuffed to discover that i had managed 16.8Km which was 3.5Km more than my previous longest run last week :) it took 1hr 33min which gave me a pace of 5m31s per Km.
So my training progress is coming on and i am ahead on my target for an extra mile each month until i get to Aug,which will give me my distance required for the GNR 2012.

First charity 10K done.
Completed my first charity run yesterday. It was the Age UK Wrap up and Run 10K in Southport.
It was a good day, apart from the weather, but an experience never the less.
I raised roughly £150 excluding gift aid,so am happy to of contributed to a worthy cause.
I ran it with a female co runner for the day and it was her first attempt at a 10K run.she did well by completing it and didn't seem that puffed out,so i think it will be the first of many for her.She raised money for Age UK as well for the event, not sure how much.
So it is on to my full time preparation for The GNR as i'll call it from now on as its a lot shorter lol.
I am going to attempt to add a minimum of 1 mile per month to my distance in my weekly runs,i've added 1 mile per week for the last two weeks so am ahead of schedule,so need to work on my endurance so my legs will get me there.
My run will probably be on Saturday this week so ill post any progress,i'll probably go for a repeat of my longest run last week of 8.16miles/13k :)

Great North Run training update 27/2/12
Did a 2a.m. training run yesterday morning after work as i haven't got a day off til the weekend and i'm in work for 10 days straight!
decided to take it nice and easy and ran slow so i could breath comfortably without feeling like i was struggling for enough air,it seemed to worked really well as i felt like i could get a good distance under my belt and advance my training.
I managed to do 13Km/8.16 Miles which was just short of one mile more than my previous longest run from last week which was 7.2 Miles.
It took me 1hr 13mins with a pace of 5.34minutes per km,which overall was a slower pace than my previous run But with the extra distance ,and stopping 4 or 5 times to stretch because my legs were tightening up and starting to pain i was quite happy with the progress.
So if i run slow and steady i should be able to slowly improve my distance, which will then mean it will be down to my muscle endurance, which will improve in time with more runs anyway.
I've got the Southport Age UK 10K charity run on sunday morning,so looking forward to that.I'm running with a female friend,so it should be a slow and comfortable run.

Training run 7.2 miles
Just completed my training run for this week,7.2 miles which is 1 mile longer than my previous longest run.
wasn't easy, really wanted to give up but managed to complete by giving my self a target point up ahead that i could have a little walk for a few minutes to get my breath back and then carry.
I got a stitch again after roughly 3 miles and struggled to run through it,tried to change my breathing and timing etc, helped a bit but i think the little stretch every time i had a walk seemed to help get rid of it.
didn't feel that bad at the last 3/4 mile i think it was because the end was near :)
Oh well, need to keep that distance up for the next 3 weeks and then add another mile :(
